Unit E Gallery proudly presents “Three” an exhibition in two parts by Long Beach based artist John Hillis Sanders. The exhibition is consisting of a black light installation in Unit E gallery and video/still photo documentation at Utopia Restaurant.
For this project Sanders has covered the entire gallery space with black canvas and replaced the existing light fixtures by black light florescent tubes. Suspended from the ceiling, there are three, galvanized steel stars, painted with bright florescent paint. The painting part was done in a period of eight to ten days, using a stick, splashing the paint into the surface, one color/layer per day.
The result is memorizing. “It’s like looking into the galaxy from the passenger seat of small spacecraft”, said a viewer.

Making installation art since 1975, Sanders site-specific work involves viewer interaction by creating visual play using light, weightlessness, and color.

Sanders was the recipient of one of two artist fellowship grant awarded by the arts council for Long Beach in 2000. He received his graduate degree in ceramics in 1972 from CSULB. He taught sculpture at CSULA and UCI.
