ARTS FOR ALL: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHING ARTISTS

If you are a teaching artist who wants to maintain the integrity of your creative vision in your arts lessons’ while aligning with the California State Academic Content Standards in the Visual and Performing Arts and other core curricular areas such as Open Court, these workshops are for you. Master teaching artists will model successful, grade-appropriate, standards-based lessons. Registrants must have participated previously in an introductory course on the standards or have prior knowledge of the standards. A distinct workshop is offered for each arts discipline.

INTEGRATING THE MAGIC OF WORLD MUSIC WITH THE STANDARDS
Teaching artists will explore diverse approaches to teaching and modeling the arts with award-winning World Music composer, performer and artist-educator John Zeretzke. Through hands-on activities, participants will reflect on their own approaches to teaching the arts and discover different pathways to learning, which will inform their teaching practices. The workshops will include modeling of successful arts lessons, discussions about lesson design, and approaches to aligning arts experiences with the VAPA standards.

Instructor: John Zeretzke is a leading teaching artist and presenter associated with the Los Angeles Music Center, the California Arts Project and the California Literature Project. He performs for thousands of children annually across the nation.

EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY: SUCCESSFUL VISUAL ART LESSONS AND THE STANDARDS
Participants in this workshop will engage in a hands-on visual art lesson geared towards the elementary level that meets the VAPA standards, other academic content standards and Open Court themes. Various teaching and assessment strategies will be demonstrated and teacher packets with tried and true lesson plans will be distributed. Through a narrative mural-making art lesson, participants will learn how to develop a cross-curricular approach to lesson plan design using language arts as a departure point.

Instructor: Angelica Sotiriou is an LAUSD Artist in Residence and Teacher In-Service Instructor through Angels Gate Cultural Center and an adjunct faculty member at the University of California’s Rossier School of Education.

VAPA GOES TO THE THEATER
Participants will receive a sample standards-based theater arts curriculum geared towards 6th grade that was originally developed for The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company, a non-profit organization that brings theater arts to the most at-risk young people in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. This theater arts program includes improvisation, monologues and scenes and will provide further modeling for teaching artists who want to strengthen or better articulate their lessons’ alignment with the standards. Workshop leader Zoot Velasco will also share tips for focusing groups who are not used to being focused.

Instructor: Zoot Velasco manages the Homeland Cultural Center in Long Beach and was formerly a dance and theater artist who toured internationally, teaching in schools, juvenile halls, prisons and hospitals under numerous grants and commissions.

MOVIN’ AND GROOVIN’: TIPS FOR STRENGTHENING DANCE LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM
Participants will engage in an interactive dance lesson designed for the elementary level that meets the VAPA standards and supports other subject areas in the curriculum. Seasoned teaching artist, Nannette Brodie, will model her best practices for successful dance lessons in the classroom and provide tips, suggestions and insights for other teaching artists to strengthen their dance lessons and make them more attractive to teachers and administrators.

Instructor: Nannette Brodie is a dancer, choreographer and educator who has performed, taught and led workshops nationally and internationally for seventeen years. She was nominated for a Lester Horton Dance Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2000.
